Medicube Azelaic Acid Niacinamide Clear Toner combines azelaic acid with niacinamide in a daily toner aimed at breakouts, redness and congestion. It is the entry point to Medicube's azelaic line — gentler than the 16% serum, and designed for daily use on skin that is blemish-prone but easily irritated by traditional acne actives.

Why azelaic acid is unlike the other acne acids
Despite the name, azelaic acid does not behave like AHAs or BHAs. It is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains such as barley and wheat, and it works through several mechanisms at once rather than by dissolving dead skin:
- It calms inflammation, which is why it suits redness-prone and rosacea-prone skin where standard exfoliating acids often make things worse.
- It is antibacterial, reducing the bacteria involved in breakouts.
- It inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme behind melanin production — so it fades the dark marks blemishes leave behind.
- It normalises keratinisation, helping stop pores clogging in the first place.
Two practical consequences follow. First, it does not increase sun sensitivity — a genuine advantage in Kuwait's year-round UV, and unlike glycolic or lactic acid. Second, it treats acne and the pigmentation acne causes at the same time, which matters enormously for medium and deeper skin tones where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation often outlasts and outweighs the original spot.
Niacinamide supports all of this: moderating oil, strengthening the barrier, and working on tone from a different angle by limiting pigment transfer to the skin's surface.
How it fits with the 16% serum
The Azelaic Acid 16 BB Calming Serum is near-prescription strength and needs gradual introduction. This toner is the everyday, lower-intensity version. Many people use the toner daily and the serum as the targeted treatment step — that combination is fine, since azelaic acid is not an aggressive exfoliant. If your skin is very reactive, start with the toner alone.
How to use it
- Cleanse and pat almost dry.
- Apply the toner — press it in with your palms or sweep gently with a cotton pad.
- Do not rinse. Let it absorb for a few seconds.
- Follow with serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen every morning.
Frequency: once or twice daily. Start with evenings only for the first week if you are new to azelaic acid — a mild tingle on application is normal and usually settles.
Combining: azelaic acid layers well with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and peptides. Keep it separate from strong AHA/BHA exfoliants such as Zero Pore Pad 2.0 in the same session, and from high-strength vitamin C — use those at a different time of day.

Frequently asked questions
How do you use the Azelaic Acid Niacinamide Clear Toner?
After cleansing, apply with your hands or a cotton pad and press it in. Do not rinse. Follow with serum, moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning.
Can I use it every day?
Yes, once or twice daily. Azelaic acid is not an aggressive exfoliant, so daily use is the norm rather than the exception. Start with evenings only if your skin is new to it.
Does it make my skin sensitive to the sun?
No. Unlike AHAs, azelaic acid does not increase photosensitivity. You should still wear daily sunscreen, especially if you are treating dark marks.
Can I use it with the 16% serum?
Yes. The toner is the daily base and the serum the stronger treatment step. Introduce them one at a time rather than starting both together.
What should I avoid combining it with?
Nothing is chemically incompatible. Practically, avoid stacking it with strong AHA/BHA exfoliants or high-strength vitamin C in the same application — separate them by time of day.
Does it help with redness?
Yes. Azelaic acid is well known for calming redness, which is why it appears so often in routines for reactive and rosacea-prone skin. Speak to your doctor if you have diagnosed rosacea and are on prescribed treatment.
How long until I see results?
Around 4 weeks for breakouts and texture, and 8 to 12 weeks for post-blemish marks to visibly fade. Azelaic acid works steadily rather than quickly. Individual results vary.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Generally yes — it is one of the better-tolerated acne actives. Patch test first, and start with once-daily evening use.
