Read this before you buy: two actives stacked

This is the most demanding product in the Mary&May range, and that deserves stating plainly rather than buried in the details. It combines two separate irritation mechanisms in one cream: micro-spicules, which are needle-like marine sponge structures that physically create micro-channels in the skin surface, and retinol, a genuine retinoid that accelerates cell turnover. Each alone is a legitimate active. Together, at 2,000ppm spicules and 1,000ppm retinol, the irritation risk is meaningfully higher than either the collagen spicule version or a standard retinol cream.

The formula does account for this — nano-liposomal encapsulation releases the retinol more gradually than free retinol, which reduces the irritation spike, and 2% panthenol, ceramide NP, hyaluronic acid and allantoin are included to soothe and rebuild the barrier. But encapsulation moderates the response; it does not eliminate it. If you have never used a retinoid before, this is not the product to start with. Begin with a plain low-strength retinol, establish tolerance over several weeks, and only then consider adding a spicule product.

Retinol is a true retinoid — unlike bakuchiol, which is often marketed as a natural alternative but is chemically unrelated. That distinction carries two real consequences. Retinoids increase sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen is non-negotiable while using this. And retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy and while breastfeeding — if either applies to you, skip this product entirely and speak to your doctor about alternatives.

On PDRN: the centella-derived PDRN here is not equivalent to the injectable treatment performed in clinics. Injected, PDRN is delivered into the dermis. Topically it acts largely as a surface humectant and conditioning agent. The spicules may improve penetration somewhat, but expect skincare-level results, not clinic-level ones. Similarly, claims about "strengthening the collagen barrier" describe the intended supporting effect of the soothing ingredients rather than a demonstrated structural change.

    How to use it safely

    1. Patch-test on the jawline for a few nights before applying to the full face.
    2. Apply at night only, to clean, completely dry skin.
    3. Spread along the skin's texture and press gently with your palms — never scrub or rub hard.
    4. Start once or twice a week, not daily. Build up slowly only if your skin stays comfortable.
    5. Never combine with exfoliating acids, other retinoids, or another spicule product in the same session.
    6. Wear sunscreen every day — retinol increases sun sensitivity, and the spicules leave skin freshly resurfaced.

    Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Spicule Collagen PDRN Cream?

The collagen version uses marine collagen as its main active and is the gentler of the two. This one swaps in 1,000ppm retinol and doubles the spicule concentration to 2,000ppm, making it considerably more active and more likely to irritate. If you're new to either spicules or retinoids, start with the collagen version.

Can I use it if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Retinol is a true retinoid, and retinoids are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This isn't a precaution specific to this brand — it applies to all retinoid skincare. Ask your doctor about pregnancy-safe alternatives such as azelaic acid or bakuchiol.

Is the tingling normal, or is my skin reacting?

Brief tingling from the spicules is expected — that's the physical mechanism working. What isn't normal is sustained burning, stinging, visible redness that persists, flaking or peeling. Those signal over-use: stop, let your barrier recover for a week or two, then restart at lower frequency.

Can I use it with my vitamin C serum or exfoliating acids?

Not in the same session. Stacking this with acids, another retinoid or a second spicule product substantially increases the risk of barrier damage. Use them on alternate nights, and keep vitamin C to the morning.

Will it actually shrink my pores?

No product changes pore size — pore diameter is largely genetic. What retinoids genuinely do is increase cell turnover and clear congestion, which makes pores appear smaller because they're less filled and less stretched. That's a real visible improvement, but it isn't structural shrinkage.

How long before I see results, and how long does 15g last?

Retinoid results are gradual: texture and pore appearance typically improve over eight to twelve weeks, wrinkles longer. At once or twice weekly use, a 15g tube lasts several months — the small size suits a product you should be using sparingly.
