Mary&May Spicule Collagen PDRN Cream is a micro-spicule treatment cream with marine collagen, PDRN, azulene and ceramides — the spicules create a tingling, resurfacing sensation, with soothing ingredients included to offset it.

How spicules work — and what to expect

Micro-spicules are microscopic needle-like structures derived from marine sponge. When massaged into skin they create tiny channels in the surface layer, which is intended to help other ingredients penetrate further than they otherwise would. The tingling or prickling sensation you feel is the spicules physically working on the skin surface — it's expected, not a reaction to be alarmed by.

It's worth being clear that this is a form of mechanical exfoliation and micro-injury. That has real effects — skin responds to controlled surface disruption — but it also means this is not a gentle daily moisturiser. Start with two to three times a week, avoid it entirely if your skin is currently irritated, sunburnt, broken out or compromised, and never combine it with strong exfoliating acids or retinoids in the same session. The azulene, ceramides and hyaluronic acid in the formula are there specifically to soothe and rehydrate afterwards.

On the headline ingredients, two honest clarifications. PDRN in a topical cream is not the same as the injectable treatment performed in clinics — the injectable delivers the molecule into the dermis, while topically it functions largely as a surface humectant and conditioning agent. The spicules may improve penetration somewhat, but expect topical-level results, not clinic-level ones. Applied collagen, including marine collagen, has molecules far too large to penetrate skin and integrate with your own collagen network. What it genuinely does is sit on the surface as an effective humectant, holding water and making skin feel plumper and smoother. That's a real, worthwhile benefit — it just isn't collagen replacement, and no topical product achieves that.

    How to use it

    1. After cleansing, apply an even layer to clean, dry skin.
    2. Spread along the skin's texture and press lightly with your palms — don't scrub.
    3. Expect tingling for a few minutes; this is the spicules working.
    4. Start two to three times a week and build up only if your skin tolerates it well.
    5. Wear sunscreen the next day — freshly resurfaced skin is more vulnerable to UV.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the tingling normal?

Yes. The micro-spicules physically interact with the skin surface, and tingling or mild prickling is the expected sensation. Persistent burning, stinging or visible redness that doesn't settle is not — rinse it off and reduce frequency if that happens.

Is topical PDRN the same as PDRN injections?

No. Injectable PDRN delivers the molecule into the dermis in a clinical setting. In a topical cream it acts mainly as a surface humectant and conditioning agent. The spicules may improve penetration somewhat, but this is a skincare product, not an equivalent to a clinic treatment.

Does applied collagen actually build my skin's collagen?

No — collagen molecules are far too large to penetrate skin and join your own collagen network, whether marine-derived or otherwise. What it does well is hold water at the surface, making skin feel plumper and smoother. That benefit is real, but it's hydration, not structural collagen replacement.

How often should I use it?

Start at two to three times a week. This is a treatment product involving mechanical exfoliation, not a daily moisturiser. Increase frequency only if your skin clearly tolerates it.

Can I use it with retinol or exfoliating acids?

Not in the same session. Combining mechanical exfoliation with chemical exfoliants or retinoids significantly raises the risk of irritation and barrier damage. Use them on alternating days instead.

    Who should avoid it?

Skip it if your skin is currently irritated, sunburnt, actively breaking out, or has a compromised barrier. Very sensitive or rosacea-prone skin should approach cautiously or avoid spicule products altogether — patch-test on the jawline first.
