Dr.Althea Pure Grinding Cleansing Balm is the gentler of the brand's two cleansing balms — same first-cleanse job, softer finish, aimed at skin that finds thorough cleansing uncomfortable.

Who the gentler balm is actually for
Dr.Althea did not make this because the Pore Refresh version is flawed. They made it because a cleanse strong enough to strip a full face of long-wear sunscreen is more than a lot of people need, and more than some people's skin tolerates.
Take the Pure version if any of these describe you:
- Your skin feels tight after cleansing. That tightness is the signal that a cleanse is doing more than it needs to.
- You are using retinol or exfoliating acids. A busy or compromised barrier does not need an assertive cleanse on top of it.
- You wear light makeup or sunscreen only. There is simply less to remove.
- Your skin is dry or reactive, particularly in constant air-conditioning.
Stay with the Pore Refresh version if your skin is oily, you wear heavy makeup, or this leaves your face feeling not quite clean. Neither is better — they are aimed at different skin.
What "gentler" changes, and what it does not
It means a softer cleansing action and a more cushioned after-feel. It does not mean you can skip the second cleanse — that step removes water-soluble grime, which no oil or balm handles. And it does not mean the balm is less effective at what it does: removing everyday sunscreen and light makeup.
The tightness point
Worth stating plainly because it drives a lot of bad skincare decisions. That squeaky, tight feeling after cleansing is not cleanliness — it is a disrupted barrier, and it takes hours to recover. People chase that sensation because it feels like proof the cleanser worked, then wonder why their skin is reactive and produces more oil by afternoon.
A cleanse that leaves your skin comfortable is doing its job correctly.
How to use it
- Dry hands, dry face. Water stops the balm binding to sunscreen and makeup — the most common mistake with any balm or oil cleanser.
- A small scoop with the spatula or clean dry fingers, massaged gently for about a minute. No scrubbing; the balm does the work.
- Add water and keep massaging until it turns milky. That colour change is emulsification, and it is what lets the balm rinse clean.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser.
Frequency: evenings only. Nothing needs removing in the morning.
Building a low-irritation routine around it
If you chose the Pure version because your skin is reactive, keep the rest equally undemanding: this balm, a gentle second cleanse, and the 345 Repair Cream. Add actives back one at a time, a week apart, once things have settled. The 345 Cream Mask is a useful comfort step during that period.
Keep water out of the jar
Use the spatula or dry fingers. Water in a balm jar shortens its life and is a hygiene issue.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between this and the Pore Refresh balm?
This one cleanses more gently and leaves a softer after-feel, aimed at dry, sensitive or actives-fatigued skin. The Pore Refresh version is more assertive on long-wear sunscreen and suits oily, congestion-prone skin.
Will it remove sunscreen properly?
Yes, for everyday sunscreen. If you use a very water-resistant formula and find this leaves residue, that is the case for the Pore Refresh version rather than a fault in this one.
Do I still need a second cleanser?
Yes. A balm removes oil-soluble grime; a water-based cleanser removes sweat, dust and the balm's own residue. Neither replaces the other.
Can I use it if I am on retinol or exfoliating acids?
That is exactly the situation this is made for. A gentler cleanse leaves the barrier in better shape to handle the actives you have deliberately chosen.
Dry or wet skin?
Dry, on both hands and face. Wet skin prevents the balm binding to what you are trying to remove.
My skin feels tight after cleansing. Is that good?
No. Tightness means the barrier has been disrupted, not that your face is cleaner. A cleanse that leaves skin comfortable is working correctly.
Why does it turn white when I add water?
Emulsification, and it is intentional. The emulsifier lets the balm mix with water so it rinses away completely instead of smearing.
How long does 50ml last?
Roughly two to three months at one small scoop each evening.
