Dr.Althea Pore Refresh Grinding Cleansing Balm is the pore-focused version of the brand's cleansing balm — a solid balm that melts on contact and removes sunscreen, makeup and the day's sebum. It is the first step of a double cleanse, aimed at congestion-prone skin.

Why a balm at all — and why it must be the first step

The logic is simple chemistry: oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen filters, long-wear makeup and the sebum your skin produces through a Kuwait afternoon are all oil-soluble. A water-based foaming cleanser cannot lift them properly.

That is why people who wear daily SPF and cleanse only once often end up with congested, bumpy skin — and blame the sunscreen. The sunscreen is usually not the problem; the cleansing routine is.

Balm or oil — a practical difference

A balm and a cleansing oil do the same job. The balm format is more travel-friendly (no leaks), tends to feel more cushioning during massage, and gives you more control over how much you use. A cleansing oil spreads faster and is quicker to use. Neither cleanses better; pick the one you will actually reach for.

    On "pore refresh"

The name promises more than any cleanser can deliver, so here is the realistic version. Thorough removal of sunscreen and sebum genuinely reduces the congestion that fills pores and makes them look larger. That is a real, visible improvement for many people.

What it will not do is change your pore size, which is largely genetic. And no cleanser reaches inside a pore and empties it — thirty to sixty seconds of contact before rinsing is not enough. What it does is prevent the daily accumulation that becomes blackheads, which is worthwhile and less dramatic than the name suggests.

If existing blackheads are the problem, a leave-on exfoliant does the work — the 2% Salicylic Acid Clear Pad is the product for that.

    How to use it

    1. Start with completely dry hands and a dry face. This is the step people get wrong. Water stops the balm binding to makeup and sunscreen, and the whole cleanse underperforms.
    2. Scoop a small amount with the spatula or clean dry fingers and massage over the face for about a minute. Spend the time on nose, chin and jaw where sunscreen collects.
    3. Add a little water and keep massaging. The balm turns milky white — that is the emulsifier doing its job, and it is what lets the balm rinse away instead of smearing.
    4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
    5. Follow with a water-based cleanser. This is the second half of a double cleanse.

Frequency: evenings only. There is nothing to remove in the morning, and a balm before your morning sunscreen is a wasted step.

    If it leaves a film

Almost always one of two things: not enough water during emulsification, or not enough rinsing. Add more water and keep massaging until it goes properly milky, then rinse for longer than feels necessary.

Keep water out of the jar

Use the spatula or dry fingers. Water introduced into a balm jar shortens its life and is a hygiene issue on skin that is already congestion-prone.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a second cleanser after this?

Yes, if you have worn sunscreen or makeup. A balm lifts oil-soluble grime; a water-based cleanser removes sweat, dust and the residue of the balm itself. Neither replaces the other.

Should I apply it to wet or dry skin?

Dry, on both face and hands. Water prevents the balm binding to sunscreen and makeup — the most common reason people find a balm disappointing.

Will a cleansing balm break me out?

It should not, provided you rinse properly. Breakouts blamed on balms usually come from incomplete emulsification leaving residue. Add more water, massage longer, rinse thoroughly.

    Does it actually shrink pores?

No — pore size is largely genetic. It clears the sebum and sunscreen that fill pores and make them more visible, which is a real difference but not the same thing.

    Will it clear my blackheads?

It prevents the daily buildup that becomes blackheads. For existing ones, a leave-on BHA does the work — a cleanser is on your face for under a minute.

Can I use it to remove eye makeup?

It removes most eye makeup well. Close your eyes, massage gently, rinse carefully. Expect brief blurring if any gets in the eye — that clears with rinsing.

Balm or cleansing oil — which is better?

Neither. A balm travels better and feels more cushioning; an oil is quicker to spread. Choose the format you will actually use nightly.

    How long will 50ml last?

Roughly two to three months at one small scoop each evening.
