Dr.Althea 15% Niacinamide Purity Serum delivers niacinamide at a high concentration for tone, oil control and pore appearance. Niacinamide is one of the few genuinely well-evidenced actives in skincare — and 15% is at the upper end of where that evidence sits.

What niacinamide does, and why it is worth the attention

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is unusual: genuinely well-studied, effective on several fronts at once, and tolerated by almost everyone. There is no need to oversell it.

    • Tone. It interferes with the transfer of pigment into skin cells, which evens overall tone over time.
    • Barrier. It supports the skin's own production of ceramides — a reason it suits sensitive skin rather than challenging it.
    • Oil. There is reasonable evidence it moderates sebum, which is why oily skin often does well on it.
    • Pore appearance. Follows from the above — less oil and better-maintained skin means pores look smaller, though their actual size is unchanged.

    Is 15% better than 5%?

An honest answer: not necessarily, and higher is not automatically better.

Much of the research supporting niacinamide's benefits used concentrations in the 2–5% range. Above roughly 10%, evidence of additional benefit thins out while the likelihood of flushing and irritation rises.

So 15% is a legitimate, potent formulation — and it is at the demanding end. If your skin is sensitive, a lower concentration used consistently may serve you better than a high one that makes you flush. The active that works is the one you keep using.

If you flush easily, the niacinamide in the Niathione Cream or the 345 Repair Cream arrives at a gentler level in a moisturiser base.

    The flushing question

A minority of people get transient warmth or redness with niacinamide, and it is more common at higher concentrations. It is harmless and usually settles as skin adjusts. If it does not, reduce to once daily or use it at night only. It is not an allergy and does not mean niacinamide is wrong for you — it may just mean 15% is.

    How to use it

    1. Cleanse and tone, then apply to slightly damp skin.
    2. Two to three drops across the face and neck.
    3. Follow with moisturiser.
    4. Sunscreen every morning — without it, brightening work is undone daily.

Frequency: twice daily. At 15%, starting once daily for the first week is sensible even if you have used niacinamide before.

    Combining it

Niacinamide is one of the easiest actives to pair. It works with retinol, with acids, with hyaluronic acid, and — despite a persistent internet myth — with vitamin C. The claimed niacinamide-plus-vitamin-C conflict came from a study using raw ingredients at high heat, not finished formulations. In real products, on real skin, they are fine together.

It is genuinely useful alongside the 0.1% Gentle Retinol Serum, where it supports the barrier and can reduce retinol's irritation.

    The timeline that matters

Tone changes take eight to twelve weeks — the point at which most people abandon a brightening product, having seen nothing at week four. Oil control often shows sooner. Photographs in consistent lighting are far more reliable than memory.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 15% niacinamide better than a lower percentage?

Not necessarily. Much of the supporting research used 2–5%, and above about 10% evidence of extra benefit thins while irritation rises. It is a potent formulation, but a lower concentration used consistently may suit sensitive skin better.

My skin flushes when I use it. Is that a problem?

Transient flushing affects a minority of people and is more common at higher concentrations. It is harmless and usually settles. If not, drop to once daily, use it at night only, or move to a lower concentration.

Can I use niacinamide with vitamin C?

Yes. The supposed conflict comes from an old study using raw ingredients under heat, not finished formulations.

Will it fade my dark spots?

It works on overall tone rather than individual marks. For defined dark spots, a targeted product does considerably more.

How long until I see results?

Eight to twelve weeks for tone; oil control often shows sooner. Most people give up around week four, which is too early.

    Does it actually shrink pores?

No — pore size is largely genetic. Less oil and better-maintained skin makes pores look smaller, which is a real visible difference but not the same thing.

Can I use it with retinol or acids?

Yes, and it can reduce the irritation those cause by supporting the barrier.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Niacinamide generally is, but 15% is at the demanding end. Start once daily and consider a gentler option if you flush.
