Dr.Althea 0.1% Gentle Retinol Serum is a deliberately low-strength retinol aimed at people who have never used one, or who have tried and reacted badly. Retinoids are the most rigorously studied ingredient class in skincare — and the easiest to use badly.

Dr.Althea 0.1% Gentle Retinol Serum at a glance

    Size 30ml
    Active Retinol 0.1%
Best for First-time retinol users; sensitive skin
    When to use Evening only
Start at Twice a week, building slowly
Timeline 12 weeks minimum; 6 months for fine lines
Not for use in Pregnancy or breastfeeding

    Important safety information

Do not use retinol if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. Oral retinoids are known to cause birth defects, and although topical absorption is far lower, the standard medical advice is to avoid retinoids entirely during pregnancy. That advice applies at 0.1% as much as at higher strengths.

If that applies to you, niacinamide is generally regarded as a more pregnancy-compatible alternative — the 15% Niacinamide Purity Serum is the option in this range. Confirm anything of this kind with your own doctor rather than a product page.

Why 0.1% is the right place to start

The instinct is to buy the strongest retinol available. With this ingredient that is usually the wrong call, and the reason is specific.

Retinol causes an adjustment period — dryness, flaking, mild irritation, sometimes a temporary increase in breakouts. It settles over four to six weeks if you build up slowly. Start too strong or too often and you get a badly irritated face in week two, conclude retinol does not suit you, and stop.

It probably does suit you. You went too fast. 0.1% is a genuine beginner strength — enough to work, gentle enough that most people get through the adjustment without abandoning it.

    What retinol actually does

Retinoids change how skin cells behave: they speed cellular turnover, influence collagen production, and normalise the process that clogs pores. Decades of research support this, which is why dermatologists recommend them so consistently.

It is the one ingredient class with real evidence for fine lines. Hydration plumps lines temporarily; retinol works on the structure underneath, slowly. It also helps with texture and congestion along the way.

    How to use it

    1. Evening only. Retinol degrades in light and increases sun sensitivity.
    2. Start at twice a week for two weeks. Then every other night for two weeks. Then increase only if your skin is genuinely comfortable.
    3. Apply to completely dry skin — wait about ten minutes after cleansing. Damp skin increases penetration and irritation without improving results.
    4. A pea-sized amount for the whole face. More is not better.
    5. Avoid the eye area, nostril creases and lip corners, where skin is thinnest and reacts first.
    6. Follow with moisturiser — the 345 Repair Cream is the natural partner.
    7. Sunscreen every morning, without exception.

    The sandwich method

If you are sensitive: moisturiser, then retinol, then moisturiser again. It reduces irritation noticeably at a small cost in potency — and a slightly weaker dose you tolerate beats a full dose you abandon.

What not to combine it with

Do not use exfoliating acids on the same night. Acids plus retinol is the most reliable route to a damaged barrier. If you use the 2% Salicylic Acid Clear Pad, alternate nights.

Do use it with: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, panthenol. None of these are exfoliants and all of them help.

    Honest timeline

    Weeks What to expect
1–6 Adjustment: dryness, flaking, possible purging. Normal.
    6–12 Smoother texture, clearer skin
12–24 Tone and early fine-line improvement
6 months+ The results retinol is actually known for

Retinol is a long game. If you are not prepared to use it for six months, it is not the right purchase — and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to decide.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use retinol while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Standard medical advice is to avoid retinoids entirely during pregnancy, when trying to conceive, and while breastfeeding — at any strength. Niacinamide is a commonly recommended alternative, but confirm with your doctor.

Is 0.1% strong enough to do anything?

Yes. It is a genuine beginner strength — effective, and gentle enough that most people get through the adjustment period without giving up. The active that works is the one you keep using.

    How often should I start?

Twice a week for two weeks, then every other night for two weeks, then increase only if comfortable. Starting nightly is the most common reason people abandon retinol.

My skin is flaking and breaking out. Should I stop?

Not necessarily — four to six weeks of dryness, flaking and some purging is a normal adjustment. Reduce frequency rather than stopping. Genuine burning, swelling or raw redness is different: stop and let the skin recover.

Can I use it with exfoliating acids?

Not on the same night. Alternate. That combination is the most reliable way to damage your barrier.

    Morning or evening?

Evening only. Retinol degrades in light and increases sun sensitivity. Daily sunscreen is essential regardless.

    Damp or dry skin?

Completely dry — wait about ten minutes after cleansing. Damp skin increases irritation without improving results.

How long until I see results?

Texture and clarity at six to twelve weeks. Fine lines take six months or more. It is a long-term commitment rather than a quick fix.
