Anua Rice Enzyme Brightening Cleansing Powder is a dry powder cleanser that activates with water — the gentlest form of exfoliation Anua makes, and the one to use when acids are too much. It is a few-times-a-week product, not a daily wash.

How enzyme exfoliation differs from acids and scrubs
There are three ways to remove dead skin, and they are not interchangeable.
| Enzymes (this) | Acids (AHA/BHA) | Physical scrubs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Method | Digests surface proteins | Dissolves the bonds between cells | Abrades the surface |
| Strength | Mildest | Moderate to strong | Variable, easily overdone |
| Self-limiting? | Yes — stops when rinsed | No | No |
| Sun sensitivity | Minimal | Yes, meaningful | Some |
| Sensitive skin | Usually fine | Often too much | Often too harsh |
The self-limiting point is the important one. Enzymes act only on dead surface protein and only while the product is on your face. Rinse it off and the process ends. Acids continue working after application, which is what makes over-exfoliation with them so easy and so common.
That makes enzyme powder the safest exfoliation to recommend to someone whose skin is already reactive — the category where most people get into trouble.
Why powder
Enzymes degrade in water. Keeping them dry until the moment of use is a genuine formulation reason rather than a gimmick, and it also means no preservative-heavy liquid base. The powder format is doing real work here.
Honest limits
This is mild. If you have persistent blackheads or genuinely rough, congested texture, an enzyme powder used twice a week will not resolve it — a leave-on BHA will do considerably more. Choose this because your skin cannot tolerate acids, not because you expect it to outperform them.
On "brightening": the effect comes from removing dull surface cells so light reflects more evenly. That is real and noticeable. It is not pigment correction, and it will not fade dark spots.
How to use it
- Tip a small amount into a wet palm — roughly half a teaspoon.
- Add water and work it into a lather between your hands. It will not foam until properly wetted.
- Massage onto damp skin for 30–60 seconds. No pressure — there is nothing abrasive here, and scrubbing adds only irritation.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Follow with toner and moisturiser while the skin is damp.
Frequency: two to three times a week, as your second cleanse. Not daily, and not as your only cleanser.
Do not stack it with other exfoliants
On nights you use this, skip acids and skip retinol. Mild is not the same as free — layering exfoliation from three directions is how people end up with a damaged barrier while believing they are being gentle.
Keep it dry
Water in the jar activates the enzymes and they degrade. Dry hands, close the lid, and keep it away from the shower.
Which Anua exfoliant should you choose?
| Product | Choose it for | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Rice Enzyme Cleansing Powder | Sensitive skin, gentle resurfacing | Very mild |
| Heartleaf 77 Clear Pad | Congestion on sensitive skin | Mild |
| BHA 2% Gentle Exfoliating Toner | Persistent blackheads | Moderate |
| Triple Acid Microdart Patch | Individual spots | Targeted |

Frequently asked questions
How is enzyme exfoliation different from acids?
Enzymes digest dead surface protein and stop working the moment you rinse. Acids dissolve the bonds between cells and keep acting after application. That makes enzymes far harder to overdo and much better suited to reactive skin.
How often should I use it?
Two to three times a week as your second cleanse. Daily use is unnecessary and defeats the point of choosing a gentle exfoliant.
Can I use it every day?
You could, but there is no benefit and you would be exfoliating far more than most skin needs. Two or three times a week is the sensible range.
Will it clear my blackheads?
It helps with surface texture and dullness. For persistent blackheads a leave-on BHA does considerably more — choose this because acids are too much for your skin, not because you expect it to outperform them.
Can I use it with retinol or acids?
Not on the same night. Mild exfoliation is still exfoliation, and stacking it under retinol or an acid is how barriers get damaged.
Why is it a powder?
Enzymes degrade in water, so keeping them dry until use is a real formulation reason. Keep water out of the jar for the same reason.
Does it need sunscreen the next day?
You need sunscreen every day regardless. Enzyme exfoliation causes less sun sensitivity than acids do, but that is not a reason to skip it.
Will it brighten my skin?
By removing dull surface cells so light reflects more evenly — a real, visible effect. It is not pigment correction and will not fade dark spots.
