The two ratings cover different threats. SPF50+ measures UVB — the burning wavelengths — filtering roughly 98%. PA++++ is the top of the UVA scale, covering the deeper-penetrating wavelengths behind pigmentation, loss of firmness and long-term damage. UVA passes through window glass and stays fairly constant through daylight hours, which is why sunscreen is worth wearing indoors near windows and on cloudy days.
