Dr.Althea Gentle Vitamin C Serum uses a stabilised form of vitamin C rather than pure ascorbic acid — a deliberate trade of some potency for a great deal more tolerability. It is the vitamin C for people whose skin stings at the stronger versions.

Stabilised vitamin C versus pure ascorbic acid
This is the distinction that determines whether you will get on with this product, so it is worth two minutes.
Pure ascorbic acid (L-ascorbic acid) is the most studied form and the most potent. It is also the most temperamental: it needs a low pH to work, which is why it stings; it oxidises quickly on exposure to light, heat and air; and it turns orange as it degrades.
Stabilised derivatives — ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ethyl ascorbic acid and similar — are chemically modified so they hold up better. They are more stable, work at a skin-friendly pH, and do not sting.
The honest trade-off: derivatives must convert to ascorbic acid in the skin to work, and that conversion is not complete. Milligram for milligram they are less potent than pure ascorbic acid.
That sounds like a loss until you weigh it properly. A gentler vitamin C used every morning for six months will do more for your skin than a stronger one that stings, oxidises in your bathroom and gets abandoned after three weeks. Consistency is the variable that actually determines results here.
Who should choose this one
- Sensitive or reactive skin, or anyone who has tried a vitamin C serum and found it stung.
- First-time vitamin C users who do not yet know how their skin responds.
- Anyone already using retinol or acids and not wanting to add another demanding product.
- Anyone whose previous vitamin C went orange before they finished it.
Why vitamin C is a morning product
Most actives suit the evening. Vitamin C is the exception.
Its most valuable function is antioxidant — neutralising free radicals generated by UV and pollution, which happens during the day. Applying it at night is not wrong, but the antioxidant is largely gone by the time the damage occurs.
Vitamin C and sunscreen are genuinely complementary: sunscreen blocks most UV, and the antioxidant handles the fraction that gets through. In Kuwait's UV levels that pairing is the most effective daytime combination available to you.
How to use it
- Morning, after cleansing and toner, onto dry skin.
- Two to three drops across face and neck.
- Wait a minute, then follow with moisturiser.
- Sunscreen over the top — always. Vitamin C supports sunscreen; it offers no meaningful UV protection of its own.
Frequency: daily. Most people need no adjustment period with a stabilised form, which is the point of it.
Storage still matters
Stabilised derivatives are more robust than ascorbic acid, not indestructible. Keep the bottle closed, out of direct light, and away from heat. In a Kuwait summer, storing vitamin C in the fridge is sensible rather than eccentric. A marked darkening means it has oxidised and lost potency.
Combining it
Fine with: niacinamide (the old conflict story comes from a study on raw ingredients under heat, not real products), hyaluronic acid, sunscreen.
Separate from: retinol — vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night is the standard arrangement.

Frequently asked questions
Is stabilised vitamin C less effective than pure ascorbic acid?
Milligram for milligram, yes — derivatives must convert in the skin and that conversion is incomplete. But a gentler serum used daily for months beats a stronger one that stings and gets abandoned. Consistency matters more than peak potency here.
Should I use it morning or night?
Morning. Its main value is neutralising free radicals from UV and pollution during the day, working alongside sunscreen.
Will it sting?
It should not. Stabilised derivatives work at a skin-friendly pH, unlike pure ascorbic acid which needs a low pH and stings as a result. That is the whole reason to choose this version.
Can I use it with niacinamide?
Yes. The supposed conflict comes from an old study on raw ingredients under heat, not finished formulations.
Can I use it with retinol?
Not in the same application. Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night is the standard and sensible arrangement.
Does it need refrigerating?
Not strictly, but it helps in a Kuwait summer. Keep it closed, dark and cool. A marked darkening means it has oxidised.
How long until I see results?
Eight to twelve weeks for tone. Antioxidant protection starts on day one, but that is prevention rather than something you can see.
Does vitamin C replace sunscreen?
No. It offers no meaningful UV protection. It handles damage from the UV that gets past your sunscreen, which is why the two belong together.
