What propolis brings, and who should skip it

Propolis is the resinous material bees produce to seal and protect the hive. In skincare it functions mainly as an antioxidant and a soothing, mildly antibacterial ingredient, and it gives formulas a characteristic slightly sticky richness that dry skin tends to enjoy. The glow people describe is largely a hydration and light-reflection effect rather than anything happening to pigment.

The important caveat is allergy. Propolis is a recognised contact allergen, and reactions are more common with it than with most cosmetic ingredients. If you are allergic to bee stings, honey or other bee products, do not use this. Even without a known allergy, a patch test on the inner forearm for a few days is genuinely worth doing here — more so than with an average toner.
