Which spots these actually work on

Hydrocolloid is a wound-care material, and that is the honest way to understand it. The patch absorbs fluid from an open blemish, holds it in a moist sealed environment that suits healing, and physically blocks you from touching or picking. The white bloom you see when you peel it off is absorbed exudate — not, despite the popular claim, the spot's contents drawn out through unbroken skin.

This distinction determines whether the patch helps. On a spot that is open, weeping or has already been popped, it works well and visibly speeds up flattening. On a closed bump under the surface, a blackhead, or a deep cystic lesion, there is nothing for it to absorb and no route in — the patch will do essentially nothing beyond stopping you from picking, which admittedly has real value.

Note also that this is not a treatment for acne as a condition. Patches manage individual spots after they appear. If you are getting them regularly, the useful intervention is a routine ingredient — a leave-on BHA, benzoyl peroxide, or an adapalene-type retinoid — with patches as damage control alongside.

How to use it

1. Start with clean, completely dry skin. Any residual moisture or oil stops the patch adhering.
2. Apply before serums and moisturiser, directly onto bare skin over the spot.
3. Choose a patch slightly larger than the blemish so the edges seal on healthy skin.
4. Leave for at least six hours, or overnight. Replace with a fresh one if it turns white and saturated.

Frequently asked questions

Does the patch pull the spot out?

No. It absorbs fluid from a blemish that is already open. The white patch you see afterwards is absorbed fluid, not extracted contents — nothing is drawn through intact skin.

Why did nothing happen to my spot?

Almost always because the spot was closed. Hydrocolloid needs an open surface to draw fluid from. On under-the-skin bumps and cystic spots it has nothing to work with.

Can I wear it during the day under makeup?

Yes. The patches are thin and semi-translucent. Apply to bare skin first, then makeup over the top — makeup underneath will stop it sticking.

How long should I leave one on?

Six hours minimum, overnight ideally. If it turns fully white before then, the patch is saturated and a fresh one will do more.

Will it prevent scarring?

Indirectly and meaningfully — by keeping the area covered and stopping you from picking, which is a leading cause of post-acne marks. It has no direct effect on existing scars.

Can I put a spot treatment underneath?

Better not to. The patch traps whatever is under it against the skin, which can cause irritation. Use one or the other on a given night.

How is this different from the Acne Pimple Master patches?
