Anua Vitamin C 20 Blemish Serum is a high-concentration vitamin C serum aimed at post-blemish marks and antioxidant brightness. Vitamin C is genuinely effective and genuinely temperamental — and the storage advice on this page matters more than it does for anything else in the range.

Why vitamin C is a morning product

Most actives are recommended for the evening. Vitamin C is the exception, and the reason is worth understanding because it changes how much you get out of it.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Its most valuable function is neutralising the free radicals generated by UV and pollution — damage that happens during the day. Applying it at night is not wrong, but it means the antioxidant is largely gone by the time the damage occurs.

Vitamin C and sunscreen are genuinely complementary: sunscreen blocks most UV, and the antioxidant handles the fraction that gets through. Neither substitutes for the other, and together they do more than either alone. In Kuwait's UV levels that combination is the single most effective daytime pairing available.

The instability problem — and what you should actually do

Vitamin C is among the least stable ingredients in skincare. It degrades on exposure to light, heat and air, and as it degrades it loses potency and darkens.

    The practical rules:

    • Keep the cap tightly closed and do not leave it open on the counter.
    • Store it away from light — a drawer or cupboard, not a windowsill.
    • Keep it cool. In a Kuwait summer, the fridge is a reasonable choice and not an eccentric one.
    • Never leave it in a car.

If it has turned deep orange or brown, it has oxidised and lost much of its activity. A slight colour shift over time is normal; a marked darkening means it is past its useful life. This is why the small 20g size is sensible — you will finish it before it degrades.

    An honest note on 20%

Higher is not automatically better with vitamin C. Above roughly 20% there is little evidence of added benefit, and irritation rises. 20% is a strong, meaningful concentration and it is at the demanding end for sensitive skin. If yours stings easily, start every other day, or choose the niacinamide and tranexamic acid serum instead — that route to brighter skin is considerably gentler.

    How to use it

    1. Morning, after cleansing and toner, onto dry skin.
    2. A small amount across the face. This is a concentrated product.
    3. Wait a minute, then follow with moisturiser.
    4. Sunscreen over the top — always. Vitamin C supports sunscreen; it does not replace it, and it offers no meaningful UV protection of its own.

Frequency: daily if tolerated. Every other day is a sensible start for sensitive skin.

    Combining it

Fine with: niacinamide (the old conflict story comes from a study on raw ingredients under heat, not real formulations), hyaluronic acid, sunscreen.

Separate from: retinol — not because they are dangerous together, but because both can irritate and using them at once is more than most skin wants. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night is the standard and sensible arrangement.

Care with: exfoliating acids on the same application. Alternate rather than layer.

    What to expect on marks

Post-blemish marks fade over eight to twelve weeks. Vitamin C helps by interfering with pigment production and by providing antioxidant support while the mark resolves. It works on the flat red or brown marks left after a spot — not on indented or raised scarring, which is textural damage that no serum addresses.

    Frequently asked questions

Should I use it morning or night?

Morning. Its main value is neutralising free radicals generated by UV and pollution during the day, and it works alongside sunscreen rather than instead of it.

My serum has turned orange. Is it still good?

A slight colour shift over time is normal. Marked orange or brown means it has oxidised and lost much of its potency. Keep it cool, dark and tightly closed to slow this — the fridge is reasonable in a Kuwait summer.

Can I use it with niacinamide?

Yes. The supposed conflict comes from an old study on raw ingredients under heat, not finished formulations.

Can I use it with retinol?

Not in the same application. Both can irritate, and together they are more than most skin wants. Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night is the standard arrangement.

Is 20% too strong for me?

It is at the demanding end. If your skin stings easily, start every other day, or choose the niacinamide and tranexamic acid serum, which is a much gentler route to the same goal.

    Will it fade acne scars?

It fades the flat red or brown marks left after a spot, over eight to twelve weeks. It does not affect indented or raised scarring, which is textural damage no serum addresses.

    Does vitamin C replace sunscreen?

No. It offers no meaningful UV protection. It neutralises damage from the UV that gets past your sunscreen, which is why the two belong together.

    Why such a small size?

Sensible, given the instability. A 20g bottle gets used before it degrades — a larger one would likely oxidise before you finished it.
